Calm Handlers. Capable Dogs.
Dog Training in Barnstaple.
Grounded, 1:1 outdoor sessions in North Devon, balancing structured obedience with handler mindfulness.
Walking your dog shouldn’t feel like a battle or a source of stress. When our dogs struggle with the world around them, it’s easy for us to lose our confidence, tighten the leash, and react out of frustration.
I founded Leash and Lotus to bridge the gap between canine behaviour and handler mindfulness. By bringing structure to your dog's training and a calm, patient focus to your teamwork, we build a partnership rooted in mutual trust—right out in the real world where you need it most.

The Pillars
The Leash:
Practical Obedience & Clear Boundaries
Every dog is an individual; a rigid, "one size fits all" training plan simply doesn't cut it. I teach a balanced, reward-first approach to build practical obedience and manage real-world behaviour challenges. From basic good manners to a bulletproof recall, we'll focus on clear boundaries, fair communication, and functional skills that keep your dog safe, engaged and fulfilled.
The Lotus:
Mindful Handling & Calm Awareness
True transformation happens at the other end of the leash. Dogs are incredibly perceptive mirrors of our internal state; if you are anxious, holding your breath, or bracing for trouble, your dog feels it. I integrate simple, practical mindfulness techniques into our sessions to help you regulate your own energy, read your dog’s subtle body language, and respond with quiet confidence instead of panic.
Our Training Focus
I believe in building functional, real-world skills that make daily life with your dog peaceful and enjoyable. Our 1:1 outdoor sessions take place in the public parks of Barnstaple, training directly around the distractions—like cyclists, wildlife, and other dogs—that you encounter every day.
What We Focus On:
Good Manners: Teaching your dog basic behaviours and impulse control to encourage an appropriate response to triggers.
A Bulletproof Recall: Building a reliable, enthusiastic return when called, even around distractions, so your dog can enjoy off-leash freedom.
Real-World Engagement: Helping your dog focus on you in busy, stimulating outdoor environments, so you get to make the decisions.
Handler Confidence: Teaching you how to read canine body language, manage your own energy, and handle your dog with calm structure.
Please note: My services focus entirely on foundational obedience, handler education, and everyday manners. I do not provide clinical behaviour modification for severe canine psychological trauma or severe dog-to-human/dog-to-dog aggression.

How I Work

Community-Focused & Donation-Based
Quality support should be accessible to everyone who loves their dog. Leash and Lotus operates on a pay-what-you-can basis. Whether you are supporting a rescue dog or just need a guiding hand, we will find a path that fits your current reality.
Real-World, Outdoor Sessions
Our classrooms are the public parks and paths of Barnstaple. Training out in nature provides the real-world distractions your dog actually encounters every day, ensuring their progress transfers directly to your daily life.
The Leash and Lotus Donation Model
Quality support should be accessible to every person who loves their dog, regardless of their financial situation. Leash and Lotus operates entirely on a community-focused, pay-what-you-can / donation basis.
How it works:
Book a Session: We arrange a 1:1 meeting in a local Barnstaple park via email.
The Session: We spend an hour working together on your specific goals, balancing structured training with handler focus.
Contribute Safely: After our session, you will receive a secure Monzo payment link via text or email. You contribute whatever amount fits your budget—whether that is a standard professional fee, a nominal donation, or nothing at all if you are experiencing hardship. No invoices, no pressure, and complete confidentiality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly do the sessions take place? All sessions are primarily held outdoors in public parks and footpaths within the Barnstaple area. Training in a real-world environment ensures that the skills you and your dog learn transfer directly to your daily walks.
However, we understand that some dogs (and handlers) can feel incredibly overwhelmed right out of the gate. If you are struggling to make progress, we can easily arrange your initial sessions as a home visit within the Barnstaple area. This allows us to comfortably build basic focus in the safety of your living room - the ultimate low-distraction sanctuary - before we graduate to the park together.
Is there a minimum donation amount? No. There is absolutely no minimum fee or hidden cost. The model exists to support the North Devon community and local dog owners. You genuinely pay what you can afford, or nothing at all if you are experiencing hardship. A typical donation ranges from £10 to £40.
What do I need to bring to a session? Please bring your dog on your current collar or harness, a standard webbed lead (no extendable/flexi-leads, please), and a pouch of your dog's favourite training treats. Please don't feed your dog right before the session as it'll make your job harder!
What is your training philosophy? I use a balanced, "mostly positive" approach. This means we focus heavily on rewarding desired behaviours with food, praise, and focus, while establishing fair communication and clear, calm boundaries so your dog understands what is expected of them.
How do I book a session? Because I focus on a highly personalized, high-touch experience, all bookings are handled manually. Simply drop me a note using the contact form below with a brief overview of your dog's age, breed, and the specific goals you’d like to work on, and I'll get back to you directly to arrange a tim
Rob Harding
Founder and Trainer, Leash and Lotus
For many years, I led and motivated teams to deliver high-profile projects in intense environments, until I realized there was much more to life than an endless, high-stress to-do list. My dogs tried to teach me that for years and my current dog, Freya, a young and energetic German Shepherd, reminds me of it every day. That journey of self-transformation and mindfulness reshaped how I view connection—not just between humans, but between us, our dogs, and everything else.
Now based in North Devon, I combine that deep focus on personal wellbeing with tailored canine obedience work. I don't just train the dog at the end of the leash; I support and empower the person holding it. Let’s head out into the park and get started.
